The Davuilevu Theological College (DTC) was officially presented with its Certificate of Registration Renewal by the Higher Education Commission Fiji (HECF) during a brief ceremony attended by senior staff from both institutions.

HECF Director, Dr. Eci Naisele, handed over the certificate to DTC Principal, Rev. Savenaca Vuetanavanua, acknowledging the college’s commitment to maintaining high standards in tertiary education. Accompanying Rev. Vuetanavanua were Vice Principal, Rev. Taniela Baleikorodawa, and Coordinator for Undergraduate Studies, Rev. Dr. William Powell.

Speaking on behalf of the college, Rev. Baleikorodawa expressed gratitude for the support received from HECF and shared that the process of registration renewal had been a valuable learning experience. He noted that engaging in Quality Assurance (QA) processes had strengthened the integrity and operations of the institution.

“HECF’s support is invaluable to the Davuilevu Theological College,” he said.

Dr. Naisele congratulated the college on its successful renewal and emphasized HECF’s ongoing commitment to supporting institutions like DTC.

Higher Education Commission Fiji (HECF) Director, Dr. Eci Naisele, attended the graduation ceremony of the Nausori Polytech Centre held today at Vunimono Hall, where 181 students were awarded certificates after successfully completing various technical and vocational courses.

The event was officiated by the Prime Minister, Hon. Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka, who served as Chief Guest. In his remarks, Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized the importance of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), stating it is the practical pathway to employment and entrepreneurship.

Dr. Naisele congratulated the graduates on their achievements and acknowledged the institution’s critical role in equipping Fijians with industry-relevant skills.

To date, Pacific Polytech has awarded National Qualifications to more than 870 Fijians, with 56 percent of graduates already engaged in the workforce.

As part of his orientation, the new Director of the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Dr. Eci Naisele, met with the Chief Executive Officer of the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service (TSLS), Dr. Hasmukh Lal. The meeting was also attended by the Chairman of HEC, Mr Steve Chand.

During the meeting, both parties discussed strengthening collaboration between the two organizations. As statutory bodies, HEC and TSLS aim to enhance cooperation on key areas such as government investment in education, returns on investment in human capital, graduate employment outcomes, labour market needs and trends, data sharing, and policy development.

Both institutions expressed their commitment to building a stronger partnership through joint initiatives and shared activities.

The Higher Education Commission Fiji (HECF) today welcomed His Excellency, Mr. Martin Wandera, Director of the International Labour Organization (ILO) for Pacific Island Countries, in a landmark meeting aimed at exploring new avenues for collaboration.

Mr. Wandera was accompanied by Ms. Surkafa Katafono, ILO Project Officer. The delegation met with HECF Chair Mr. Steve Chand, Director Dr. Eci Naisele, and senior members of the Commission to discuss potential areas of partnership.

This marks the first official engagement between the ILO and HECF, signaling the beginning of a collaborative relationship. Discussions focused on how the ILO can support HECF in strengthening its projects and initiatives, particularly in areas that align with skills development, decent employment, and workforce readiness.

Both parties expressed optimism about the opportunities ahead and committed to ongoing dialogue to advance shared goals in education and labor development across Fiji.

In welcoming the new Director, HECF Chairperson, Mr Steve Chand expressed full confidence in Dr. Naisele’s leadership and called on all staff to extend their full support.

“We are delighted to have Dr. Naisele on board and look forward to the fresh perspective and energy he brings. We encourage all team members to work collaboratively to drive our shared goals forward,” the Chair said.

Dr. Naisele brings a wealth of experience in the education sector and is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the future direction of higher education in Fiji.

It was all smiles for Ms. Feriel Ali as she proudly received a Certificate of Recognition for her institution from the Chair of the Higher Education Commission Fiji, Mr. Steve Chand. She was accompanied and supported at the ceremony by her business partner Mr. Amit Biswas.

Feriel is the founder and Director of Verve Lounge, an establishment that is set to become a leader in advanced skincare education in Fiji. The institution will specialise in advanced skin care programs focused on promoting skin health, combining clinical expertise with aesthetic treatments, all delivered in a luxurious and professional environment.

In his remarks, Mr. Chand congratulated Feriel on her achievement, noting that the institution’s work will play a significant role in up-skilling locals, particularly in the western region, to meet the demands of Fiji’s growing tourism and wellness market.

Nakasi High School hosted a vibrant celebration last evening to honour its athletes’ achievements at the 2025 Coca-Cola Games, with special guests including the the Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, Hon. Agni Deo Singh and the Chair of the Higher Education Commission Fiji (HECF), Mr. Steve Chand.

The event, held at the school, was organized at the invitation of the school’s Principal and brought together teachers, parents, students, and school management. The evening recognized student-athletes who brought home medals from the prestigious national athletics meet, with prize money awarded as an incentive for their dedication and performance.

In his address to the students, Mr. Steve Chand emphasized the importance of making informed decisions about their education and career paths. He highlighted the value of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a viable and rewarding option for students. Mr. Chand also shared insights into the upcoming Life After Sports initiative, which aims to support student-athletes in building sustainable futures beyond their sporting careers.

Hon. Agni Deo Singh encouraged the student-athletes to channel the same dedication and discipline they show in sports toward their academic pursuits. His key message to students was a strong reminder to stay away from drugs and make positive, healthy choices for their future.

Despite being a relatively lesser-known institution, Nakasi High School made headlines by giving strong competition to some of the country’s top schools during the Coca-Cola Games finals, earning respect and admiration across the education and sporting communities.

The celebration also marked the beginning of the first-term school holidays, sending the Nakasi school community into the break on a high note.

Following the conclusion of the Fiji Principals’ Conference 2025, some Heads of Schools from the Northern Division visited the Higher Education Commission Fiji (HECF) office for an informal engagement session. 

 The school leaders gathered to reflect on and discuss key messages delivered by HECF Chair, Mr. Steve Chand, during the conference. The meeting provided an opportunity for open ‘talanoa’ around the Commission’s initiatives.

The Chair of the Higher Education Commission Fiji (HECF), Mr. Steve Chand, delivered an address on the second day of the Fiji Teachers and Principals Conference 2025 at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, emphasizing the urgent need to guide students earlier in their educational journey.

Speaking to school leaders, Mr. Chand elaborated on the HECF’s initiative with the Ministry of “right-pathing” and “staircasing” secondary school students — a strategic approach designed to help students find suitable pathways before they leave school.

“It’s too late to try and capture students after they’ve finished school,” he warned, urging a more proactive approach within the school system. He stressed the importance of identifying students’ strengths and aligning them with viable education and career pathways from an earlier stage.

Mr. Chand also called for stronger collaboration between the HECF and school leadership, particularly Heads of Schools. “We see Heads of Schools as the general practitioners of the education sector — they understand the landscape better than anyone else,” he said.

The HECF, he added, is committed to fostering deeper engagement and cooperation with school leaders to ensure students are better prepared for higher education and beyond.
